Delta Tau and the Little Blue House
The Delta Tau Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta was installed at Colgate University on November 14, 1981. Our Little Blue House sleeps twelve in four singles, one double, and two triple rooms. The President, Administrative Vice President, Financial Vice President, House Manager, and New Member Educator live in the house. The remaining spots are open to any of our sisters. Our two-car garage holds the cars of the President and Financial Vice President.
Symbols
Mission Statement: The mission of Gamma Phi Beta is to foster a nurturing environment that provides women the opportunity to achieve their potential through life-long commitment to intellectual growth, individual worth, and service to humanity.
Open Motto: Founded upon a rock.
4 Core Values: Love, Labor, Learning, Loyalty
The Badge: The badge is the symbol of an initiated member and thus may be worn only after initiation. Each member purchases a badge at the time of initiation unless special permission is granted to wear an alumna relative’s badge. Each new member receives a new member pin to wear during the New Member Education Period. It is returned to the chapter at initiation. Alumnae who have been honored for outstanding service to Gamma Phi Beta wear special recognition pins.
Colors: Officially brown and mode; unofficially brown and pink
Official Flower: Pink carnation
"Official" Jewel: The pearl (Gamma Phi has no official jewel; however, many chapters have adopted the pearl)
Ritual:
Gamma Phi Beta ritual was created by our founders and based upon ceremonies of ancient secret societies. It is what separates Gamma Phi Beta from other organizations while at the same time illustrating our beliefs and ideals. It is the common bond among all members, representing a link to the past as the sorority grows into the future. Ritual connects each member of Gamma Phi Beta regardless of age or geographical location.
House History
1868 Our house was constructed as a personal residence by John Pyne, a local businessman and real estate developer. The carpentry work was completed by Englishman Isaac Kelloway, who was considered an “expert stair-builder”
1870s Colgate Professor Hezekiah Harvey took up residence. Harvey graduated from Colgate in 1845 when it was still called Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution. He taught at the Theological Seminary and was named Dean of the Faculty.
1898 Professor Albert Perry Brigham bought the house after Harvey’s death. Brigham graduated from Colgate in 1879 when the school was called Madison. He completed graduate work at Harvard and returned as one of Colgate’s most respected professors – and an internationally renowned resource in geology and geography.
1915 Brigham gave the house a study and an architectural makeover. He replaced the Victorian style with “English cottage.”
1963 The Little Blue House hosted its third Colgate grad, Frank L. LeRoy (class of 1935) who purchased the house from Brigham.
1970s Little Blue hosted Peace Studies Professor Alan Geyer (1972-1977) followed by Dean of Students Robert C. Wilhelm (1977-1980).
1980 Alpha Delta Nu, the local sorority that eventually became Gamma Phi Beta, purchased the house.
1981 The Delta Tau Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta was installed on November 14th and purchased the house from Delta Nu, making Gamma Phi the first international sorority on the Colgate Campus.
2005 Colgate University officially purchased Little Blue from Gamma Phi Beta, making it now a part of university housing.
